California State University, Stanislaus was established by the state legislature in 1957 as part of a major expansion of the CSU system. Instruction began on September 19, 1960, at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds while the permanent campus was being constructed. The college moved to its permanent 228-acre site in Turlock in 1965, with the Library and Classroom Building and supporting facilities anchoring the new campus in the heart of the valley.
Stan State granted its first four-year degrees in 1966 and achieved university status in 1985 when it was officially renamed California State University, Stanislaus. Today the university serves over 10,000 students through four colleges offering 47 undergraduate programs and 26 graduate degrees, with a 17-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
